Is BCCI Targeting Ishan Kishan? Reddy Anna Book

Ishan Kishan

The simmering discontent between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Ishan Kishan has reached a crescendo, as the young cricketer’s decision to prioritize IPL 2024 preparations over Ranji Trophy has raised eyebrows and drawn criticism. Kishan’s withdrawal from the Test series in South Africa due to mental fatigue already put him on shaky ground, and his subsequent absence from the ongoing five-Test series against England has only added fuel to the fire.

Rahul Dravid, the Head Coach, had expressed his desire for Kishan to engage in domestic cricket before making a return to the national squad. However, the southpaw chose an alternative path, opting to hone his skills at the Kiran More Academy in Vadodara alongside Hardik and Krunal Pandya. This decision has not gone down well with the BCCI, which is evidently displeased with what they perceive as a disregard for red-ball cricket, particularly the prestigious Ranji Trophy.

Sources suggest that the BCCI is preparing to issue a notice to all players, except those recovering from injuries like Hardik Pandya, directing them to participate in the Ranji Trophy unless on national duty. The discontentment seems to stem from a dissatisfaction with certain established players already adopting an IPL-centric mindset from January, a trend that the BCCI aims to curb.

“In the next few days, all the players will be communicated by the BCCI to play for their state team in the Ranji Trophy, as long as they are not on national duty, with only those who are unfit and recovering at the NCA being granted an exemption. The Board isn’t too happy with certain players already in IPL mode from January,” a source revealed.

The spotlight is now on Ishan Kishan, who has thus far defied Dravid’s wishes. Whether he will comply with the BCCI’s directive to participate in the Ranji Trophy remains uncertain. The upcoming Group A match against Rajasthan at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur, starting from February 16, could be a pivotal moment in this ongoing saga. Cricket enthusiasts await to see whether Kishan will prioritize the red-ball format over IPL preparations, potentially mending ties with the cricketing establishment.
